Welcome to Over-Hill Nation
Honoring Our Cherokee Heritage
Our Journey
A Legacy of Resilience and Community
Founding Principles
The Over-Hill Nation Cherokee Descendants was founded in 1990 by Dr. Lee Roy Gibson Ph.D., known to the Nation as Man Many Trees. Inspired by a profound 7-Day Vision Quest in 1978, he dedicated himself to uniting the descendants of the Over-Hill Nation. His mission was to educate and share their rich traditions and culture, instilling a sense of unity and identity within the community. Through dedication, perseverance, and two decades of diligent research, he established the foundational principles that guide our organization's mission and core values.
Cultural Preservation
Our journey encompasses a deep commitment to cultural preservation and education. We engage in numerous initiatives aimed at teaching both our community and the wider public about Cherokee traditions, languages, and histories. By hosting "Gatherings", and educational programs, we strive to ensure that our heritage is not only remembered but also celebrated.
Community Engagement
The Over-Hill Nation cherishes the essence of community. We promote collaboration across the broader Native American community. All cultures are invited to join us. We actively encourage our members to partner with local educational institutions to enhance awareness of our presence in the community.
Heritage Projects
Celebrating Our History Through Action
Cherokee Language Revitalization
One of our key initiatives focused on the revitalization of the Cherokee language. We do not claim to be the last word in the Over-Hill dialect but we as a Nation are trying to bring it back. Our handbooks, which are available (through donation) can include the language portion which has an extensive vocabulary list as well as pronunciation and the Cherokee Symbology. This project aims to empower individuals and ensure the survival of our language for future generations.
Cultural Awareness Festivals
We have successfully organized several cultural awareness festivals that highlight Cherokee traditions, arts, and crafts. These festivals not only celebrate our culture but they provide an opportunity to express our spirituality though the traditional ceremonies.
Blue Feather Curriculum
The Blue Feather Curriculum was created to engage young Cherokee descendants in their cultural heritage. Through mentorship and hands-on activities, participants learn about their history and the importance of cultural identity. This program aims to inspire a new generation of leaders who are proud of their Cherokee roots.
